Stocks in Asia were tepid in Friday afternoon trade, as an escalation in U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods kicked in at 12:01 a.m. ET Friday. Mainland Chinese stocks were higher by the morning session's end that occurred before the implementation of the higher rates, with the Shanghai composite gaining 1.5% and the Shenzhen component jumping 1.87%. The Shenzhen composite also rose 1.818%. Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index added 0.64% by the end of its morning session.
